Frequently Asked Questions

How does Careers In Depth work?
Before the first consultation you will be asked to write us in your own way about your current career issues or education concerns. Once we have received your letter an appointment will be arranged with one of the consultants, (usually within two weeks).

Then, through a series of one to one meetings with a consultant, you are encouraged to explore what has brought you to this point. Gradually, a picture emerges which will reveal thoughts and ideas not just about present circumstances but also about the past and about key relationships, personal and professional, that may have been forged over the years.

Sharing these thoughts with an experienced professional can begin a creative process whereby an individual can revisit and re-evaluate past decisions. Further, it becomes possible to take stock of the present and maximise the possibility of making well-founded decisions about the future.

After an initial meeting of up to 1 ½ hours, future hourly meetings will be arranged to develop the process. Typically, consultations will consist of between four to six sessions, typically once per week or fortnight.
In some cases, a follow-up mentoring relationship may be established where you might choose to continue to meet on a monthly or ad hoc basis until issues have successfully resolved themselves and plans implemented.

You can come either to Careers In Depth main offices in Belsize Park London, or arrange with your consultant an alternative location in private consulting rooms situated around London.
Where clients are travelling longer distances, certainly from other parts of the country, client and consultant may meet for longer and less frequently. Why does how I feel about work seem to affect everything else in my life?
Work and education choices can frequently coincide with important life-events such as leaving home, school or college, getting married or having a first baby, separating or divorcing from a partner, becoming ill, being made redundant, have a career break or suffering a bereavement.

In short, work and education choices are often underpinned by emotional issues and our service seeks to focus on an exploration of the relationship between the two: between a client's professional and personal development.

How many sessions will I need and where will they take place?

Do you offer psychometric testing?
It is a feature of our approach that we aim to offer a bespoke service, tailored to each individual. This means that rather than foreground the more concrete aspects of career advice or guidance such as personality or aptitude tests as a matter of course, we introduce them only after careful consideration by both client and consultant about whether they might be helpful.

As such they form only one aspect, rather than the basis of the consultation. These are not always necessary or relevant, but can be very useful in some cases. Likewise, a visit to the University of London Careers Library, with whom we have a special arrangement, may be organized.
