Psychometric Testing

Psychometric testing
The use of psychological tests has grown rapidly in the last few years and, indeed, some 75% of British companies now use them. However, Careers in Depth does not believe tests are "Magic" but are used, when appropriate, as one tool complimenting our multifaceted bespoke service.

It may be used to explore a person’s career path or for the purpose of career development or choice or in the context of recruitment. Tests can also assist to re-affirm abilities, personality strengths/ weaknesses and investigate interests within the working world.

Careers in Depth’s occupational psychological section selects tests from the vast range on the marketplace, which have high reliability and validity and are well respected and established. From this battery of tests we select appropriately and carefully for the needs of each individual or organisation.

What is a psychometric test?
In the widest sense any structured task from which inferences are made concerning abilities, aptitudes, personality or interests is a psychological test.

At Careers in Depth tests are used in the context of in-depth career interviews whether it is to explore a person’s career path or whether it is for the purpose of career development or choice or in the context of recruitment. At Careers in Depth therefore we view tests as one of the tools that contribute to obtaining a multi-faceted understanding of the individual.

What are tests used for?
Our use of tests in occupational counselling centres around helping clients to make vocational and educational decisions. More specifically they are used to clarify and refine the client’s self-conceptions as part of the decision making process, by evaluating the client’s interests, aptitudes, abilities and behaviours.

There are times during an individual’s life when you appear to be at a crossroad or a watershed. This may have been triggered by a particular life crisis such as redundancy, bereavement, retirement or divorce. Or you may be feeling that your potential is not being used in your current work, or you are experiencing uncertainty, dissatisfaction, lack of fulfilment, lack of direction or a sense of involvement.

Who would be tested?
Careers in Depth will discuss with you the appropriateness and applicability of testing in your circumstances and will advise you accordingly.

Psychometric tests have been developed to cater for the majority of the working population, from school leavers and graduates through to senior managers and executives. They therefore cover a very wide range of skills and abilities.
